#123New mail address ineffective

My main account is ertes. I have changed my e-mail address in my user preferences. Even though the change was reflected in the UI, it seems that I'm not getting any mails from hub.darcs.net. This is particularly unfortunate right now, because the only host that knows my ertes password is currently broken, so I really need the password recovery mail.

  • Thanks for the report. I see that your mail provider (at least) is rejecting all darcs hub mails with this message:

    Mar 2 08:01:44 joyful postfix/smtp[20338]: 40EE91705D: to=<...@gmx.de>, relay=mx00.emig.gmx.net[212.227.15.9]:25, delay=0.92, delays=0.03/0.01/0.89/0, dsn=4.0.0, status=deferred (host mx00.emig.gmx.net[212.227.15.9] refused to talk to me: 554-gmx.net (mxgmx012) Nemesis ESMTP Service not available 554-No SMTP service 554-Bad DNS PTR resource record. 554 For explanation visit http://postmaster.gmx.com/en/error-messages?ip=173.255.219.222&c=rdns)

    I've had a look at this but I'm still unclear - is it a DNS misconfiguration or a mail server blacklisting ? Is it to do with joyful.com (the hub.darcs.net server) or darcs.net (the from address of darcs hub emails is darcsden@hub.darcs.net) ? Perhaps you or your mail provider's tech support has an idea ?

  • According to the error message they seem to assume that the IP address of the originating server is a dynamically allocated address. If this is not the case, then you or your mail provider should contact GMX. They are one of the most widely used mail providers in Germany, so it's possible that many darcshub users are affected by this problem.

  • This seems related to the configuration of the PTR RR:

    $ host hub.darcs.net
    hub.darcs.net has address 173.255.254.113

    $ host 173.255.254.113
    113.254.255.173.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer li280-113.members.linode.com.

    Most email servers don't accept mails from a server whose A/PTR Resource Records don't meet.

    Please check at https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/dns/configure-your-linode-for-reverse-dns/ for how to make 113.254.255.173.in-addr.arpa resolve to hub.darcs.net

  • Thanks, this is configured and should take effect within 24 hours.

  • It has taken effect, please re-test if you get a chance (Gian Piero).

  • I guess it didn't work as I've not received your comment (as I've been subscribed to this ticket, I assume I should have to). Unfortunately I do not manage my own MX, so I cannot check the logs. Do you still have the mail logs for 2018-07-14 so to check it on your side? (my configured email is gpiero at rm-rf. it)

  • test

  • Thanks for the report. Mail needed more configuring on the new server. I think it's fixed now.

  • Thanks, got the mail so this is now working for me.

    If I've got it correctly these were two different issues, so still need the OP's report about the state of the original issue.

    • status set to closed

    OP is gone (this year, alas) and won't be reporting back. We appreciate his bug report. Since we've fixed the mentioned "Bad DNS PTR resource record" issue I'm going to assume this is fixed. RIP ertes.
